America 250 in Chemung County

2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States and invites us to celebrate our nation’s birthday while reflecting on the ongoing work of building a more perfect union. In Chemung County, that story comes to life through the people who helped shape our country, the places that connect us to the Revolutionary era, and the moments that challenged the ideals we continue striving toward today. We also honor the full history of this region, including the devastating impact the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign had on Native communities. Use this page to explore local stories, plan visits to historic sites, follow the driving tour, and find America 250 events happening across Chemung County.

The Sullivan-Clinton Campaign in Chemung County: A Driving Guide

The route begins at the Chemung Valley History Museum in Elmira and takes you to historical markers and key sites connected to 1779, including the Encampment marker and Newtown Battlefield State Park.

The guide also includes a longer reading section, Patriotic Profiles: Chemung County in the Revolutionary War, for visitors who want more context.

This project was supported by a Save Our History grant furnished by The History Channel.
